Creating medical devices takes patience, as many steps are needed. For instance, plaster casts or wax impressions might be needed; precision measuring instruments are used; there is carving, cutting, molding, buffing, and grinding of various materials, including wood, plastic, and wax; and pigments might be mixed to match skin color. Your medical lab technician training should prepare you for all of these.
You can earn formal medical lab technician training through one of the nation's 4 orthotic and prosthetic technician programs accredited by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE). While it is possible to earn on-the-job training, the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that many employers prefer to hire those who have been formally trained. Your program can typically be completed in 1 to 2 years, awarding either a certificate or associate's degree. Either way, your medical lab technician education program should include training in the following:- human anatomy & physiology
- orthotic & prosthetic equipment/materials
- applied biomechanical principles
Your training should include both coursework and clinical rotations.
