Help Yourself By Helping Others - Get a Career in the Health Services Industry

Health services made up the largest US industry, providing over 13 million jobs! Much of the industry is comprised of offices of physicians, dentists, and other health practitioners. Though hospitals account for only two percent of all health services establishments, they employ forty-one percent of all workers.

The health services industry is comprised of nine different segments. Hospitals: providing complete medical care, ranging from diagnostic services, to surgery, to continuous nursing care. Nursing and residential care facilities: providing inpatient nursing and rehabilitation, and personal care for those needing continuous nursing care but not hospital services. Physicians' offices: providing specialty private practices and group practices. Dental offices: providing specialized dental care including surgery. Home healthcare services: providing skilled nursing and medical care in the home. Offices of other practitioners: including chiropractors, optometrists, podiatrists, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, audiologists, speech language pathologists, dietitians and other miscellaneous health practitioners. Outpatient care centers: establishments such as kidney dialysis centers, outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers, health maintenance organization medical centers, and freestanding ambulatory surgical and emergency centers. Other ambulatory healthcare services: including ambulance services, blood banks, organ banks, pacemaker monitoring, and smoking cessation programs. Medical and diagnostic laboratories: providing analytic or diagnostic services to the medical profession or directly to patients.

Many health services workers average fewer hours than in most private industries. About sixteen percent of the health services workforce is made up of part-time workers. Many healthcare jobs also require around the clock attention, allowing employees to work various shifts to fit their needs.

Heath services worker earnings tend to be slightly higher the average private industry job. Hospital workers earn considerably more than average and typically more than those employed in nursing and residential care facilities. Wage and salary employment in the health services industry is projected to increase by twenty-eight percent, significantly faster than most industries. Now is the time to enter this rewarding and growing industry. Get the education you need today to enter the health services industry of tomorrow!
